As you know, at Angarde, our ambition is to give meaning to your approach. And this also passes by the choice of our materials. Today it is the "leather" of grape which is in the honor.

After the pineapple "leather"(Piñatex ®) or the cactus "leather" (Desserto®): the alternatives to the traditional leather that we used until now in our production, we will make in this article a zoom on the grape "leather": material of our new sneaker collection After Surf.

We remind you that we will speak of vegetable "leather" by emphasizing the quotation marks because no leather can be vegetable or vegan. By definition, leather originates from the skin of an animal. However, to date, no term exists to designate these materials.

Grape "leather", by an Italian start-up Vegea®.

It is Vegea®, an Italian start-up that has won the race to invent vegetable "leathers".

Founded in Milan in 2016 by an architect and a chemist, Vegea's ambition was to create eco-sustainable materials for the fashion and design industry, excluding all animal matter and adopting a circular economy model.

It is more than successful with the invention of this vegetable "leather" requiring no new resources or cultivated land since it is made with everything that was traditionally discarded by the 7,500,000 hectares dedicated to the wine industry in the world: the skin, branches and seeds of grapes, as well as pruning residues!

And Vegea® did not stop there since the small company also decided to patent a textile thread resembling cotton, resulting from the same waste of vine.

How does Vegea® transform grape marc into vegetable "leather"?

The Vegea® grape "leather" is really exceptional. First of all by its very accomplished aspect and absolutely similar to the animal leather. Also because it is an ultra-resistant material. But especially by its incredible manufacturing process:

  • The vegetable waste is collected and placed in ovens to heat up. Once dehydrated, they are reduced to powder.
  • To make a strong, resistant and waterproof textile, the fine powder is mixed with a resin composed of grape oil (bio-composed) and polymer (PU 25%) based on water.
  • We then obtain a thick white paste ready to be colored (in the respect of the Man and the planet obviously).
  • The dough is then rolled out into a large strip to allow it to dry, andall that's left to do is cut out the fabric to make our accessories. And that's it!

An innovative, sustainable & animal friendly material whose production has a very low impact on the planet in addition to being very easy to clean. For these reasons, we chose the vegetable "leather" of grape to make our new After Surf Raisin and we are delighted with the result!
